Regrettably, we have reached a point where it has become clear that it’s time to bring the Monday night Time Trial’s long history to an end. The accident that occurred prior to last week’s race brought the reality of pre-existing safety concerns to the fore. In recent years there have been numerous bicycle related accidents- three lethal accidents in the last few years alone- along the stretch of Rt. 1 that is integral to the time trial. The reality today is that the safety and liability risks exceed our threshold of tolerance.
The Monday Night Time Trial has a long and distinguished history. When it first began, nearly 40 years ago, South County was a much different place than it is today. Route 1 was a much quieter road and the time trial worked quite well. Over time, the area has grown significantly and traffic on the road has increased exponentially, which is to say nothing of the speed with which cars are moving and the undeniable truth that many of these same drivers are also trying to manage various distractions. The fact that the race has survived this long is remarkable. It’s a testament to the many people who have worked to put the race on and the many, many racers who have supported the time trial over the years. David Reed, who was involved in last Monday’s accident, is a great example of both – his technical know-how is responsible for the construction of the count-down timer which has set you off, at the starting line, for many years. The sad truth is: it’s now time to bring this history to an end
To those of you who purchased season passes for the race, we will happily reimburse you for the outstanding portion of the season. To those who paid to race last week and are not going to get a chance to race this week, we will gladly refund your entry fee as well.
Given the abbreviated season, we will not be giving formal awards this year. However, we will be having a party, at some point in the very near future, to get everyone together one final time and end the era of the Monday Night Time Trial the same way each season has been brought to a close over the last 40 years, with pizza, drinks and laughs, and lot’s of good friends who make South County such a special place to a cyclist.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
